President Biden is being criticized for his foreign policy in Israel, and perhaps with justification. Yet, there are some areas where Biden reduced military spending. When the United States pulled its troops from Afganistan, we reduced military spending by 2 billion dollars. We spend far too much on our military, especially when we need to increase funding for Social Security and the care economy. So, it is good to see one area where military spending was reduced.
The two graphs below show military assistance as a percent of foreign aid to Afghanistan between 2019 and 2021. The percentage of military assistance declined dramatically in the 2021 budget.
This data comes from foreignassistance.gov . At this website, you can see how much assistance the United States gives to different countries and regions by category. You can also drill down by category and see what the money was allocated for in each country.
I can guess the responses that I will get to this diary. I admit that I am not an expert on Afghanistan, but as a former sociology professor I did show my students the budget of the United States, indicating how much money is spend on the military as opposed to discretionary safety net programs.
