AP:
The campaign spends about $100 to $150 a month on Web hosting services with MyHostCamp, said Dan Geary, who administers the site for the campaign. Geary said that MyHostCamp, which is owned by a friend of Geary's, gave the site more than enough bandwidth _ 200 gigabytes a month _ to handle a crush of visitors.
First of all, $100/month is still not enough for hosting a serious website. The campaign went cheap, and they bought a shitty product. You get what you pay for.
Second of all, all the bandwidth in the world isn't enough to keep up a website if the server is overloaded. And I can guarantee you that no single normal server can handle the kind of traffic spike experienced by Joe2006.com on a shared host with 74 sites on it.
I have unlimited bandwidth limits at Daily Kos. I simply pay for what I use.
Daily Kos crashed on election night not because I ran out of bandwidth, but because the servers couldn't handle 2,000 visitors per minute.
Dan Geary is an idiot -- underscored not just by his inability to get the site working on election day, but by the fact that three days later, it's still offline.
I expect this story won't die until we get the full truth. And I expect there to be repercussions -- and the appropriate media coverage -- if it turns out that the Lieberman campaign wasted the resources of the FBI for political gain.
Turning things knee-jerk over to the FBI without investigating the possible causes of the outages is pure negligence and abuse of our law enforcement agencies.
